At Open Legal we saw that the legal market still works in a traditional way on many fronts. Many processes are manual, client acceptance takes time, and for business owners legal services are often unpredictable because of the familiar billable hour. We wanted to change that fundamentally and work far more digitally.

Because Ubert looks beyond just building software. They look at the complete business model, the processes behind it and how technology and AI can actually add commercial value. That approach ultimately produced not one, but three major projects.

Together we delivered three major concepts. The first is Legal ID: a digital, AI-driven platform that lets business owners carry out KYC checks and credit checks, among other things. The aim is to gain faster and better insight into who you are doing business with, and to make certain checks run far more efficiently. We also developed Bundelpay: a digital solution for client money (third-party funds). With it we wanted to make a traditional process far more accessible, clearer and more digital. The third major project is the new concept of Open Legal itself. We have moved away from the traditional billable hour and offer business owners legal support for a fixed monthly fee. That gives a business owner continuous access to a legal team, without first having to wonder, with every question, how many minutes a lawyer will bill for it.

What you notice most is that we can work much more like a modern digital organisation. Processes are organised more intelligently, clients can be helped faster and various tasks can be automated or supported with AI. At the same time, that has also allowed us to develop completely new services and revenue models.

What I had underestimated is how much is involved in real digitalisation. It is not just about building a platform or a website. You also have to reassess existing processes and sometimes say goodbye to ways of working that have been normal for years. That demands change internally too. But that is precisely what ultimately produces something that goes much further than automation alone.
